Fireplace Safety Tips: How to Burn Cleaner & Safer Fires

1. Choose Dry, Seasoned Hardwood

Why: Using wet or green wood produces more smoke and causes creosote to accumulate in your chimney, while seasoned hardwood burns more efficiently and cleanly.
Tip: Allow firewood to dry for at least 6 months. Hardwoods like oak, hickory, maple, and ash are excellent choices for hotter, longer-lasting fires with less creosote buildup.

2. Always Open the Damper
Why: A closed damper traps harmful smoke and carbon monoxide in your home.
Tip: Double-check that your damper is fully open before lighting a fire.

3. Improve Airflow by Cracking a Window
Why: Fires need oxygen to burn effectively. Cracking a window enhances ventilation and reduces the chance of backdrafts.
Tip: Open a nearby window slightly to promote proper airflow while the fire is burning.

4. Begin with Small, Dry Kindling
Why: Smaller, dry pieces of wood ignite more evenly and help the fire catch quickly.
Tip: Arrange the kindling in a crisscross pattern for optimal airflow and faster ignition.

5. Keep Fire Size Reasonable
Why: Overloading your fireplace can cause overheating, damage to the structure, and poor ventilation.
Tip: Stick to medium-sized fires that maintain proper air circulation for safer burning.

6. Never Burn Trash or Non-Wood Materials
Why: Burning paper, plastics, or trash can release toxic fumes and create dangerous creosote deposits.
Tip: Use only dry, seasoned hardwood to ensure a cleaner and safer fire.

7. Extinguish Fires Completely
Why: Allowing a fire to smolder can lead to unexpected flare-ups and safety risks.
Tip: Let the fire die down naturally, then spread the ashes and douse them thoroughly with water or sand to ensure it’s fully extinguished.

8. Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Why: Incomplete combustion can release harmful gases into your living space.
Tip: Place carbon monoxide detectors near the fireplace and throughout your home for added safety and peace of mind.
