Solution

After recently purchasing the home, the homeowner wanted to ensure the fireplace and chimney were safe and operational before using them. An inspection revealed significant damage and safety concerns that needed to be addressed before the chimney could be used with confidence.

Inspection revealed significant damage to the heatilator, likely from a failed attempt by a previous owner to modify the fireplace for a wood stove. The damper was beyond repair, the firebox and smoke chamber require rebuilding, and the flue has deteriorated mortar joints with a cracked top tile. Additionally, the concrete crown was worn down to the stone and the stone work needed repair.

To restore this chimney to safe, reliable operation, we rebuilt the firebox and smoke chamber and completed critical safety repairs to the flue using ceramic sealant and by replacing damaged flue tile sections. We constructed a new, crack-resistant concrete crown, installed a flue tile extension, and added a new Premier damper cap to protect the chimney from water intrusion while improving performance and longevity.
