Chimney Sweeping

A Cleaner Chimney Starts With the Right Sweep

Keep your fireplace or wood stove ready for the season with professional chimney cleaning and a clear understanding of its condition. We offer standard sweeping, power sweeping, and specialized creosote removal based on the type and amount of buildup in your chimney. Every sweep includes our 33-point inspection, so you know what we found and what to do next.

What's a Chimney Sweep?

Standard sweeps remove loose soot, creosote, and debris from accessible areas of your chimney. We typically work from inside your home, running a brush up through the flue to loosen deposits and collecting the material removed.

This is generally suited to chimneys with routine buildup that releases with brushing.

Why Sweep Your Chimney?

Burning wood leaves soot and creosote inside your chimney. Over time, these deposits can accumulate, restrict airflow, and increase the risk of a chimney fire. Professional sweeping removes buildup and helps us get a clearer look at the chimney’s condition.

For Tougher Chimney Buildups

Power Chimney Sweep

For stubborn buildup that needs more than standard brushing

Some creosote forms a dense, sticky, or shiny coating that ordinary sweeping cannot adequately remove. These deposits often require a professional treatment, such as (PCR) Poultice Creosote Remover.

We evaluate the buildup and chimney condition, explain the recommended process, and provide pricing before proceeding. Specialized removal may require a separate appointment or multiple visits.

Chemical Cleaning (PCR)

For hardened, tar-like, or glazed deposits

When deposits are more firmly attached, a power sweep is needed. It uses rotary cleaning equipment with attachments selected for your chimney’s liner and condition to help remove deposits that standard brushing leaves behind.

Power sweeping is not appropriate for every chimney or every type of creosote. We assess the system before recommending this service.

Every Sweep Includes a 33-Point Inspection

Cleaning is only part of caring for your chimney. Our inspection checks accessible internal components—including the flue, liner, smoke chamber, and damper—for visible damage, buildup, and other concerns. We also assess the chimney’s exterior for signs of deterioration or water entry.

You’ll receive an explanation of our findings and recommendations for any additional inspection, cleaning, or repairs.

We do not offer a sweep-only service.

What to Expect After Your Sweep & Inspection

You’ll receive a report with photos and a clear explanation of our findings. We’ll walk you through any concerns, answer your questions, and explain the recommended next steps.

What if we find a problem? We’ll explain what it means, which concerns need attention before you use your fireplace, and what can be addressed through routine maintenance. If repairs are needed, we’ll provide an estimate outlining the recommended work. If further evaluation is needed, we’ll explain why—so you can make an informed decision without pressure.

“ Carlos was great! He did a great job, going above and beyond the standard cleaning and inspection to fix a leaky chimney cap and remove a slab from the flue. He answered all my many questions thoroughly, giving me a better understanding of how the fireplace works. This is our second year using Potomac Services, and we love the company. We will be calling them yearly. Winter is coming, but we feel prepared! ”
